Everything you need to know about bed bugs and successful control

Have you discovered bed bugs or signs of a bed bug infestation in your home? You may have already tried various DIY methods to solve the problem. Be it bed bug sprays, traps or steam machines – the options are numerous. But the reality is that DIY treatments are often not enough to effectively control bed bugs.
Bed bugs can hide deep inside your walls and furniture and survive for months without food. This means that despite intensive efforts, they will reappear and the problem will start all over again. The truth is that effective DIY treatments for bed bugs rarely exist and often only result in temporary improvements. Professional treatment is therefore the safest way to permanently eliminate a bed bug infestation.

Where do bedbugs come from and how do they spread?
Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are common worldwide and can be found in private households as well as in public places such as hotels, hostels, dormitories and transportation. They spread mainly through the transportation of infested objects. Used furniture, mattresses and even electronics can hide bedbugs. It is particularly dangerous to take items from flea markets or the street without checking them thoroughly first.
Luggage is another common route of spread. Bed bugs can hide in suitcases and bags and thus be introduced into new environments. This is particularly problematic when travelers stay in infested accommodation. A single fertilized female can be enough to start an infestation in a new environment.
Bed bugs can migrate to neighboring apartments, especially in the case of heavy infestations. This makes it particularly difficult to combat bed bug infestations in apartment buildings, as they can easily spread from one apartment to the next.
Can you spot bedbugs with the naked eye?
Adult bed bugs are relatively visible, measuring around 4.5-8.5 mm. They have a flat, reddish-brown body and no wings. The males are slightly smaller than the females at around 4-6.5 mm. Bedbugs emit a scent that smells of bitter almonds and can be detected in heavily infested rooms.
However, the eggs of bedbugs are very small (approx. 0.5 mm long), milky white and difficult to recognize. They are glued to surfaces by the females in hiding places or in the immediate vicinity.
Young bed bug stages (juvenile stages) are also difficult to recognize. They are about 1 mm in size and have a light coloration that makes them almost invisible.
Bed bugs are mainly nocturnal. During the day, they hide in cracks and crevices in and around beds, in furniture, behind wallpaper and even in sockets. The typical signs of an infestation are black droppings, molting shells and small blood stains on the bed linen.

Health effects of bed bug infestation
Bed bug bites are not usually dangerous, as bed bugs do not transmit any known pathogens. However, the bites can be very itchy and trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people. Scratching the affected areas can lead to secondary bacterial infections. Such infections occur when bacteria enter the body through the scratched skin.
The use of insecticides for control can be an additional burden, as these chemicals are applied in living and sleeping areas. Exposure to insecticides can be particularly problematic for people with chemical sensitivities.
