What are cockroaches?
Cockroaches, also known as roaches, are one of the oldest insect species in the world, having barely changed for millions of years. These hardy insects are known for their adaptability and survivability, making them a common but uninvited guest in many households. Cockroaches are nocturnal and hide during the day in dark, damp areas such as cracks, crevices, under furniture or near drains.
Although the presence of cockroaches in a home is often seen as a sign of a lack of cleanliness, this is not always true. These pests can be introduced through a variety of ways, such as used furniture, packing materials or even open windows and doors. Once they enter a building, they look for food, water and safe hiding places to breed.
The most common types of cockroaches in Switzerland
Three cockroach species in particular are common in Switzerland, each with their own preferred habitats and behaviors. Understanding these differences is crucial to effectively controlling cockroaches in the home and preventing their spread.
German cockroach – A common pest
The German cockroach(Blattella germanica) is the most widespread cockroach species in Switzerland. It is relatively small, with a length of about 1.1 to 1.6 cm, and is characterized by a light brown to yellowish color and two dark longitudinal stripes on the first segment of the thorax.
This cockroach species prefers warm, humid environments and is often found in kitchens, bathrooms and around food. Due to its high reproduction rate and adaptability, the German cockroach poses a significant challenge when it comes to controlling cockroaches in the home or garden.
American cockroach – A dangerous intruder
The American cockroach(Periplaneta americana) is one of the largest cockroach species found in Switzerland. With a length of up to 4 cm and its reddish-brown coloration, it is easy to identify.
This species prefers damp, warm places and is often found in basements, sewers and boiler rooms. Due to its size and ability to be a flying cockroach, it can become a serious problem in urban and rural areas. Their presence can cause great concern in Switzerland as they not only contaminate buildings but also pose a health risk.
Oriental cockroach – The sinister, dark guest in Swiss cellars
The Oriental cockroach(Blatta orientalis), also known as the common cockroach, is another cockroach species that occurs in Switzerland. It is larger than the German cockroach, about 2.5 cm long, and has a dark brown to black coloration.
This cockroach prefers cooler environments and is often found in basements, garages and damp storage rooms. Unlike the German cockroach, the oriental cockroach has stunted wings and cannot fly, but this does not make it any less dangerous. Their ability to hide in dark, damp areas makes it difficult to detect an infestation until it is well advanced. Early detection and control of cockroaches is therefore particularly important with this species to prevent uncontrolled spread.
The German cockroach, the American cockroach and the Oriental cockroach are widespread in Switzerland and can quickly become one. But what exactly makes them so? Apart from their annoying presence, they can pose serious health risks. Find out what dangers these pests pose to your health in the next section.
